About Me

Sydney is an 8½-year-old chocolate Lab who has mastered the art of living well.

She’s up for a river day, beach trip, hike, camping weekend, game of Chuckit, or just about any adventure involving water. But once the adventure is over, Sydney is equally committed to the important things in life: long naps, gardening, sunbathing on the back porch, happy hour, sleeping in your bed, and the occasional unauthorized harvest of zucchini or cherry tomatoes.

She’s funny, confident, affectionate, incredibly smart, and has enough personality for three Labradors.

Give Sydney an active life with plenty of opportunities to explore, and she’ll happily come home, stretch out beside you, and snore through the rest of the afternoon.

Personality

  • Independent but affectionate. Sydney isn’t a Velcro dog, but she wants to be part of your life. She’ll settle beside your desk, nap at your feet, offer you a paw, and happily accept all available chest and rump scratches.
  • A professional napper with an adventurous streak. She’s not a high-energy dog, but she does need regular exercise, a few good miles during the week, and opportunities to run out her zoomies.
  • A water dog through and through. Sydney has loved the water since puppyhood. Rivers, beaches, swimming, boating, fishing, paddleboarding and the Oregon Coast are her happy places.
  • Playful with other dogs. As she’s settled into foster care, we’ve seen a much more playful side of Sydney. She plays with her foster brother and has enjoyed adventures and hours of beach play with canine friends.
  • Bossy by nature. Sydney has apparently been running middle management since puppyhood. She’s a solid 14/10 on the boss scale and prefers canine friends who aren’t interested in challenging her authority.
  • A true Labrador foodie. She’s extremely food motivated and loves strawberries, blueberries, watermelon and plain whole-milk yogurt. She has contemplated counter surfing but, so far, has shown admirable restraint.
  • Stuffies beware. Sydney will lovingly decimate a stuffed animal, carry around its empty carcass, and eventually decimate that too.
  • She has opinions.  One of her favorite pastimes is minding everybody else’s business. We’ve had several conversations with her, letting her know it’s perfectly legal for the neighbors to park in their driveways.

Perfect Home

  • Sydney’s ideal family wants their dog to be part of their life.

  • She needs regular exercise and a family that genuinely enjoys getting outside, especially if the destination involves water. Hiking, camping, swimming, beach and river trips, boating, fishing and paddleboarding would all suit her beautifully. She doesn’t need nonstop activity, though. Sydney’s sweet spot is adventure followed by a really good nap.

  • Dog Compatibility: Can absolutely be an only dog, but she can also live happily with the right canine companion. She has lived successfully with dogs before and has become increasingly playful with dogs in foster care. Her best match is an easygoing, non-confrontational dog that respects her space and isn't bothered by Sydney occasionally appointing herself president of everything. Highly energetic, pushy dogs are unlikely to be a good match. Sydney's initial greetings aren't always polished. Face-to-face greetings, particularly in confined spaces, can bring out her bossy, snarky side. In everyday life, however, she generally ignores other dogs while walking, at restaurants, at the vet, and out in public. She's also done beautifully meeting and spending time with dogs in open environments like the beach. Sydney loves balls, sticks and stuffies and doesn't always understand why another dog's treasure shouldn't become Sydney's treasure. High-value toys should be managed in a multi-dog home rather than asking the dogs to sort it out themselves.
  • Cat Compatibility: Previously lived successfully with cats.
  • Kid Compatibility: An adult home is the best fit. Sydney has spent time with a very energetic four-year-old in foster care and did well, including playing fetch with him. The concern isn't that Sydney is unsafe around children. She simply wasn't raised with them and doesn't understand the difference between a child's ball or stuffed animal and a dog toy. We don't want to put Sydney or a child in a position where she has to make that decision.

My Story

MEET SYDNEY

50% adventure buddy. 50% professional napper. 100% convinced she’s in charge.

Sydney has spent the last several years saying goodbye.

We’re looking for the family who can finally say, “Welcome home.”

Sydney is an 8½-year-old chocolate Lab with a huge personality, a wonderfully ridiculous sense of humor, and an impressive ability to turn almost anything into her business.

Give this girl an inch and she won’t take a mile. She’ll sign up for the full 26.2, enter the race, and somehow still finish dead last because she was too busy supervising everyone else.

She’s been known to patrol the neighborhood like she’s on the HOA board, conduct daily garden inspections, steal zucchini and cherry tomatoes, and make it very clear when the drive-thru isn’t moving at an acceptable pace.

It’s exhausting being this committed to public service.

At home, Sydney has also discovered that sleeping in the human bed is apparently a constitutional right. She’s trustworthy when left alone, loves lounging in the sunshine, will happily supervise your gardening, and after a good day will settle in for a nap accompanied by a very respectable snore.

But outside is where another side of Sydney comes alive.

Sydney’s papa brought her home as a puppy, and his family told me something that changed the way I understood her: Sydney has loved the water from the very beginning.

She grew up adventuring with him, including surfing and exploring the Oregon Coast.

That love never left her.

Put Sydney near a river, lake or ocean and you’ll see it immediately. She loves swimming, beach trips, fishing adventures, camping, boating, paddleboarding, hiking and anything else that means getting outside with her people.

She doesn’t need to spend every waking moment exercising. A few good walks during the week, opportunities to stretch her legs and run out her zoomies, and regular adventures keep her happy.

Then she’s ready to come home and do absolutely nothing.

Preferably in your bed.

Sydney can also share those adventures with another dog.

As she’s settled into foster care, a funny, playful side of her has emerged that I didn’t fully appreciate when she first arrived. She plays with her foster brother, has enjoyed multiple adventures with other dogs, and has spent hours running and playing with canine friends at the Oregon Coast. We also know she previously lived successfully with dogs and cats.

She’s still bossy. That’s simply Sydney.

The right canine companion will be easygoing enough to let her be herself and wise enough not to argue over organizational structure.

And then there’s the reason finding the right family matters so much.

Sydney was deeply loved by her papa. She was with him when he became the victim of a random assault and, after months of hospitalization, he passed away.

She eventually found another loving home with a longtime family friend who already knew and loved her. Then he suffered a stroke and could no longer care for her.

Sydney spent nearly three months in a boarding kennel before coming to Golden Bond Rescue.

Through circumstances completely beyond her control, she has had to start over again and again.

And somehow, she hasn’t lost her joy.

She’s still funny.

She’s still playful.

She still loves people.

She still loses her mind over a good stick.

She still believes every trip to the river might be the best day of her life.

That’s Sydney.

She doesn’t need another stop along the way.

She needs her last home.

River days. Beach trips. Camping. Gardening. Happy hour. Long naps. Muddy paws. Rump scratches. Maybe a four-legged partner in crime.

If that sounds like your life, Sydney might be your dog.

Sydney has spent the last several years saying goodbye. This time, we’re hoping she gets to hear, “Welcome home.” ❤️

Ready for Adoption!

Sydney has become increasingly affectionate during her time in foster care. Recently she’s started offering me her paw, surprising me with a nose kiss, leaning into chest and rump scratches, and quietly settling at my feet while I work or relax in the evening. Watching her slowly let her guard down and choose to be close to me has been incredibly rewarding.

One thing I’ve especially grown to love is that Sydney has two very different speeds. When it’s time for adventure, she’s ready for hours of hiking, swimming, fetching sticks, or exploring the Oregon Coast. When the adventure is over, she transforms into the perfect house dog. She curls up nearby, snores loudly enough to make me smile, and is completely content just being close to her people.

Above all, Sydney has an incredible sense of resilience. After everything she’s experienced, she still greets each new adventure with excitement, curiosity, and joy. I think that’s what I find most endearing about her. She has every reason not to trust the world, yet she wakes up every day believing it’s going to be a good one.

Entered Golden Bond Retriever Rescue

Sydney came into the rescue as a local, owner relinquished dog. This lovely girl spent over 2 months in a boarding kennel when her owner had a stroke. She is very happy to be in a home with people and a canine friend. We are told she is a social butterfly, pretty well trained and a perfect house guest. She was raised with dogs and cats, so her future home should be pretty easy to find. She needs a little TLC and a diet plan but she’ll be ready for her forever home soon.
