How to Adopt

At Golden Bond Retriever Rescue, we carefully match our dogs with homes where they will be safe, supported, and able to thrive. Our adoption process is designed to help create successful long-term relationships.

Why Adopt From Us?

When you adopt through Golden Bond Retriever Rescue, you gain support, guidance, and insight that helps create a successful match.

Every dog in our care has:

  • Lived in a foster home
  • Received veterinary care and evaluation
  • Been observed for temperament, behavior, and personality

Because our dogs live in foster homes, we’re able to share real insight into their routines, comfort levels, energy, and individual needs — helping you feel confident in finding the right fit for your home and lifestyle.

Adoption Process

1

Review Requirements

To ensure successful placement of our dogs, we stick to a few rules. Make sure you read them over.

If you have questions, please contact us before applying.

2

Submit an Adoption Application

Start by completing our adoption application.

This helps us understand your home, lifestyle, and your ideal dog companion.

The $50 application fee is non-refundable. If you are a return GBRR adopter, there is no application fee.

3

Application Review

Our Adoption Team will review your application. You will be assigned an Adoption Manager and they will follow up with additional questions.

4

Home Visit & Approval

Your Adoption Manager will schedule a visit from one of our volunteers to meet ALL members of your family (people and other animals). Next, the Adoption Team will approve your application if you’re a good fit for a rescue retriever.

5

Matching You with the Right Dog

You will work with an Adoption Manager who will help you get matched appropriately with the right dog. We take into consideration things like:

  • Lifestyle and activity level

  • Experience with dogs
  • Household environment
  • Individual needs of the dog

6

Meeting a Dog

After a conversion with a dog’s foster, you and your family members will meet the dog at the foster’s home. Some travel may be required.

If everyone feels it is a good match, the adoption can proceed.

7

Finalize Your Adoption

When we find the right fit, you can complete the final steps of paying the adoption fee and signing the adoption agreement. Then, you’ll be able to welcome home your new companion.

Adoption Requirements

Our adoption requirements are designed to help each rescue dog transition into a safe, stable home where they can thrive long-term.

Home Environment

Dogs must live indoors and be treated as part of the family. A stable home environment is essential.

Fencing & Outdoor Safety

A fenced yard is required in most cases. The yard or portion of the yard used by the dog must be completely enclosed by fencing that is at least 5-feet in height.

If your yard does not meet these requirements, you may still be eligible for adoption on a case by case basis. Feel free to contact us with questions before applying.

We do not accept in-ground electric fences or kennel runs as a substitute for a fenced yard. There is no exception to this policy.

Home Ownership

For the stability and security of the dog, home ownership is preferred. Renters may be considered with written landlord approval.

Children in the Home

Rescue dogs often arrive with emotional baggage that may result in behavior unlike those raised in a happy home from puppyhood.

For the safety and comfort of both the children and the dog, we have determined that our dogs are not a good fit for homes with children under 10.

For families with children 10-14 years old, we will only place dogs that are known to be good with children.

Geographical Location

Golden Bond Retriever Rescue primarily adopts within Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Northern California. Depending on the locations of the dog and adopter, travel within our covered adoption area may be required as part of the adoption process. In rare cases, we may consider adoptions outside of this region.

If you are looking for a retriever from another area, we can happily refer you to other rescue organizations closer to you.

How Long Does It Take to Adopt a Rescue Dog?

The adoption process timeline can vary depending on your application, availability of dogs, and finding the right match. While some adoptions move quickly, it is common for the process to take several weeks to several months.

A Note on Expectations

Each dog comes with their own personality, history, and needs. Our role is to help you understand those needs and welcome the dog into your home with patience and understanding.

We place all of our dogs based on making the best match between dog and family. Placements are not made on a first come first served basis.

Some dogs may need additional training, structure, or time to adjust to a new environment. We encourage adopters to approach the process with flexibility, patience, and realistic expectations.

First to Adopt Program

Our First to Adopt (F2A) program places incoming dogs directly into a potential adopter’s home.

Less is known about these dogs, so just like our regular fosters, F2As need to learn about the dog’s personality and needs. This isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay – we have great dogs matched to great adopters in our regular program too.

Acceptance into the F2A program is by invitation only.

If a dog isn’t the right fit, we prefer F2As continue fostering the dog through adoption if possible, and then we’ll work on finding the right dog.

Adoption FAQs

Thinking about adopting a rescue dog? Here are answers to common questions about the adoption process, requirements, costs, and what to expect when adopting a retriever or retriever mix.

How to Start the Dog Adoption Process

You’re welcome to express interest in a specific dog, but placements are based on overall fit. We work to match each dog with the home that best meets their needs.

Timelines vary depending on the dogs available, application volume, and the specific needs of you and the dog. We are an all-volunteer team, and we appreciate your patience as we work to make thoughtful placements.

Adoption fees typically range from $200 to $1,200, depending on factors such as the dog’s age, background, and medical care received. Adoption fees help cover veterinary exams, core vaccinations, deworming, and spay/neuter procedures. These costs allow us to provide essential care for each dog before they are placed in their new home.

How to Choose the Right Rescue Dog

Our dogs live in foster homes, which allows us to learn about their personality, behavior, and needs. We’ll help guide you toward a dog that fits your lifestyle and experience.
Yes. Meet-and-greets are part of the process once a potential match has been identified.

Senior dogs can be incredibly rewarding companions. They are often calm, gentle, and affectionate. They are often more settled than younger dogs and well-suited for quieter households or busy lifestyles. Many senior dogs still enjoy walks, playtime, and being close to their people — they just tend to have a more relaxed pace.

While you may not have as many years together, the time you do have is often deeply meaningful. Giving a senior dog a loving home can be one of the most rewarding experiences.

In retriever breeds, differences between males and females are usually minimal. Males tend to be larger (typically 65–80 pounds), while females are often smaller (around 50–60 pounds). Beyond size, personality and behavior can vary widely from dog to dog, regardless of gender.

Because all of our dogs are spayed or neutered, behaviors often associated with gender—like marking or roaming—are generally not a concern.

When it comes to finding the right fit, personality, temperament, and lifestyle compatibility are far more important than gender. Either way, you’ll find a loyal, loving companion.

Home Requirements for Adopting a Dog

In almost all cases, yes. There are some rare exceptions.

Home ownership is preferred, but renters can adopt with landlord approval. We’ll need confirmation that pets are allowed and any applicable restrictions.

In many cases, yes. Your current pets must be up to date on vaccinations, and we’ll consider compatibility when making a match.

What to Expect When Adopting a Rescue Dog

Some dogs may have basic training, while others may need lots of guidance in manners and socialization. All dogs require time, patience, and consistency as they adjust to a new home. We have lots of materials and resources to share with you as you learn about your dog’s behavior and needs.
Dogs in our care receive veterinary evaluations and necessary medical care before adoption. All dogs are neutered or spayed. Specific details will be shared for each dog.
Adjustment periods are normal. Many dogs need time to settle in and feel comfortable in a new environment. We’re here to help guide you through that transition.

After Adoption

Yes. We’re here as a resource and can help guide you if questions or challenges come up after adoption.

We take all steps to help ensure that a placement will be a success. But in the case that challenges arise that can not be worked through, we remain committed to the wellbeing of the dog, and will work with you to find a solution and determine next steps.
